Lung cancer begins when there is an abnormal cell growth in the lungs. There are four stages of lung cancer, each stage will let you know how big and how far the cancer cells been spread in the lungs. It is very important for a person and to his attending physician to know what cancer stage the patients acquire, for the doctors to decide which kind of treatment they needed to cure the patients. There are series of scanning and testing that patients need to undergo in order to know what will be the specific treatment to take. However, there are times that diagnosing of cancer stage are still uncertain, unless the surgery been done.
There are two ways to know the staging of the lung cancer, first was the number staging system and the second was the TNM system.
Number staging system been divided into four stages
- Stage one- characterized by a small cancer cell in one part of a person’s lung.
- Stage two and stage three- the cancer that grows in the lungs is larger in size and grows into its surrounding tissues there are also some cancer cells that grows in the lymph nodes. This one is a locally advanced lung cancer.
- Stage 4- this kind of cancer stage was the so called secondary cancer or metastatic lung cancer; it is the most advance stage of the lung cancer. This lung cancer is not curable; however, this thing can be treated.
On the other hand, the TNM staging system has these following factors to consider.
- The size of the cancer cells or tumors (T)
- The occurrence of the cancel cells into the lymph nodes (N)
- The spread out of the tumor in any part of the body, secondary cancer or metastatic lung cancer (M)
